The importance of a balanced diet is something highlighted...

The importance of a balanced diet is something highlighted several times since our school days but most of us fail to provide ourselves with complete nutrition from the vitamin world that our bodies need. Most of us get our fair share of the macronutrients, namely fats, proteins and carbohydrates but we may miss out on the micronutrients, especially vitamins.

Vitamins are essential to maintain normal physiological functions of our body. Every cell in our body requires vitamins to carry out the normal biochemical processes, which wouldn’t be possible without them. Vitamins function as cofactors for enzymes to catalyze chemical reactions. Multivitamins contain all the essential vitamins our body needs in case we haven’t been eating our veggies and fruits. So if you haven’t been taking your daily multivitamin, it’s about time you realize its importance.

Let’s go through some of the benefits of taking multivitamins from a vitamin shoppe.

1. Promotes Recovery from Illness

You can’t always anticipate when you’re going to get sick but you sure can do something about it once you are. During illness our bodies are not performing optimally and may not be getting all the vitamins and minerals it needs. The National Institutes of Health says when a daily multivitamin is taken during an illness, it supplies your body with all the micronutrients it needs to recover from the illness and may even reduce time of recovery.

2. If you’re on a diet, multivitamins are a must

Those who go through a strict diet plan with restricted amounts of calories to consume, typically 1,600 calories per day, may not be able to eat all the food sources to get the essential nutrients they need, which can be dangerous. Vegans are vulnerable to vitamin deficiencies too. Multivitamins are a great way to provide vegans and strict dieters with all their essential vitamins and minerals without disrupting their diet plan.

3. Improvement in cognitive function

With aging, our neuronal cognitive centers may deteriorate gradually. According to a study published in Nutrition Journal in 2007, which studied the effects of multivitamin use on 910 women and men aging 65 and older, it was found that not only do multivitamins reduce the risk of vitamin deficiencies but also may improve cognitive functioning in people aging 75 or older!

4. Keeps your energy levels high

Without an adequate intake of our essential vitamins in accordance with their recommended daily allowance, our body has to work much harder to accomplish simple tasks and you may feel fatigued due to this. Your body takes a toll without the vitamins it needs to perform simple tasks with relative ease.  According to Arizona State University’s wellness office recommends the students to take their daily multivitamin for improved energy and better response to various stress factors that they may encounter in college life. An approach we all need to adapt.

5. Improvement in short term memory

A good short term memory is something we can all benefit from regardless of our profession and age. Research has found that vitamin B significantly supports the short term memory function. It was also found that people who were supplemented with vitamin B12 performed much better in memory tests compared to those who didn’t take any supplements.
