The Fourth Man

When you reach a certain level in your life or career where others expectations of you are very high due to your past success it is hard to not take things personally when you fail to meet “their” set expectations.  Even if the job gets done.  It always reminds me of a story once told to me.

4 men are in a 1 room house and it starts to storm outside.  God speaks to them and says he will punish the wicked by striking them with lightening. The men look at each other and one by one proclaim their innocence.  They stand in the front doorway as the storm outside intensifies.  It is agreed by the 4 men that they will one by one go out and stand next to the tree in the front yard.  Surely when the wicked one among them moves into position next to the tree God will strike him down and then they will know who the wicked one was.  The first man goes out and shyly stands next to the tree, and nothing.  The man rejoices and walks back into the house with his head held high, filled with the knowledge he has been vindicated.  The second man goes out and takes his place next to the tree.  Nothing!!!  He runs back into the house filled with joy knowing he is a good man.  The third man slowly walks out to the tree, knowing the odds are 50/50 that he is about to find truth.  As he cringes next to the tree, Nothing!!!  A huge smile appears on his face, as love and admiration of his fate fills his heart.  He skips back into the safety of the house.  The fourth man steps back further away from the door proclaiming to the others that he is a good man and that there must be some mistake.  The other men begin to ridicule the the fourth man, so sure of their innocence they begin to physically punish the fourth man.  He must be evil.  They had all passed the test so it must be this fourth man who is the problem.  They strike and curse him as they carry him to the door.  They all three push him out of the house and into the storm.  Beaten, the man falls next to the tree as Lightening Strikes the House.
